Problem

The existing dashboard had several challenges. Users were constrained by the limited flexibility of the tool, which required them to create multiple dashboards to access the specific information they needed. Moreover, the process of selecting desired data was cumbersome, leading to user frustration and inefficiencies.

The user base encompassed diverse personas, each with distinct data requirements in terms of complexity, quantity, and frequency of monitoring. Addressing these issues was crucial to providing a satisfactory user experience.

Solution

To resolve these challenges, a comprehensive approach was undertaken. The new tool aimed to empower users by enabling them to create customizable dashboards that put them in control of the data they wished to monitor and how it was presented. To enhance data selection, the experience was revamped by breaking down tasks into more manageable steps. Additionally, a significant aspect of the solution was to incorporate the capability for users to share their dashboards with others, fostering collaboration and information sharing among users.

Outcome

• A streamlined tool that was designed to focus on one task at a time without overwhelming the user. The use of carefully selected design patterns such as progressive reveal, breadcrumbs, selection count, and an ‘organize’ mode. This mode separated the layout and positioning of data tables, from the creation and editing of data tables.

• Users were given 3 options for data density: spacious, comfy, and compact in addition to the ability to resize the data collections to be able to span 4, 6, 8 and 12 columns with varying amounts of detail.

• For mobile, further, exploration led to an optimal experience to display and navigate the complex data tables. The solution was to break up the data and use dropdown menus and clickable list items to reveal further layers of data. 

Deliverables

• Generated user stories, user flows, and detailed clickable wireframes for desktop and mobile, encompassing key tasks.

• Developed a concise UI style guide for developers to apply essential design elements.
